Marion couple Mike and Brandy Whitney have been stranded on I-24 for five hours in Trigg County.
Brandi said they have plenty of gasoline, but traffic is at a standstill.
"We have moved 1.5 miles in five hours," she said in a text message at 10:30pm.
State police, highway department crews and other emergency personnel have been on the interstate for several hours, too, trying to clear the highway of tractor-trailers that have crashed or become stuck on the icy highway. Seven Springs Farms, a big farming operation in Trigg County, has provided some help with there tractors.
The Whitneys had been in Nashville for a doctor's appointment and decided to try making it home late in the afternoon upon hearing that I-24 was open – after it had been closed earlier in the day.
As night fell upon the interstate, refreezing began playing havoc with motorists, semis were apparently having the toughest time.
The Whitneys are stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic about two miles east of the Ky. 139 exit.
