Ennore

Ennore constitutes the northern most area of Chennai city. The region is spread out like a peninsular landmass and is surrounded on three sides by the sea water. Ennore is quite popular as it houses one of the major ports of the Indian sub continent. The entire city that is Chennai has only two major ports - one at the Chennai centre and the other at Ennore. The place is well connected by roads and railways to other suburban regions of Chennai. The port at Ennore is the prime attraction in the region and is the hub of activities in the locality. The artificial port is the first public port of India. It is responsible for making a great revenue from the cargo transportation. The cargo handled at the port primarily consists of thermal coal and P.O.L. products. Ennore region is primarily an industrial area. The place features a number of big manufacturing units. The Ennore Foundry is one such institution. The establishment is responsible for the production of cylinder blocks and heads which are required in the automotive industries. The unit is one of the biggest suppliers of automobile parts in the Southern India. One other big name in the region is that of Ashok Leyland. The transnational conglomerate is the prime manufacturer of commercial vehicles and diesel engines. Both of these conglomerates are the ventures of Hinduja Group that operate in more than 50 countries of the world. The EID Parry Fertilizer Company, located near the railway station is also a reputed manufacturer in the region.The northern part of the suburb, the one away from the peninsular tip houses residential quarters. The Sivakami Nagar, Netaji Nagar East and Netaji Nagar West, Gandhi Nagar and Nehru Nagar are some popular residential areas in the locality. Accessibility
Roadways and railways are two convenient means of accessing the place. The region has a railway station called Ennore Railway Station that provides services in the region.
The road distance between the center of the city and Ennore is about 14 kms. One can board a bus either at George Town or at other northern suburbs like Tiruvottiyur and Tondiarpet.
