Accumulation totals at this hour are generally lower than anticipated for this first round of sleet and snow. However, in areas were heavy sleet fell early-on, there is plenty of slick driving to be found. Most highways are snow covered other than Caldwell County and Christian County. Those counties ppear to have less accumulation.
We're getting reports that pre-treated roadways are slushy in spots. However, due to cold temperatures on Tuesday most counties reported only about 1/3rd of roadways were pre-treated. Crews indicate the sleet that fell overnight was mostly hard-frozen and pelletized due to the cold temperatures.
Temperatures are in the mid-20's over most of the region with pavement temps running maybe a degree or two higher. We are still within the temperature range where our salt and other ice fighting chemicals are active. Warning temperatures during the day should assist road clearing efforts.
While radar indicates there are still some strong bands of snow moving across the region, it is mostly light and fluffy snow which makes it easier to plow.
Motorists who plan to get out on the road today should be prepared for the hazards that come with winter driving.
Our highway crews are doing their part to improve driving conditions. Please do your part by slowing down, putting down your cell phone, and paying attention to the road in front of you. Also, please be aware that sidewalks and driveways will be especially slick and hazardous in areas with more sleet accumulation.
Some of the untreated rural secondary highways will remain hazardous as crews focus initial efforts on "A" Snow Priority Routes, which include US Highways, Interstates and parkways.
