Deer hunters will arm themselves with rifles for the first time this fall and head afield starting Saturday for the Kentucky modern firearm portion of the whitetail deer season.
To kickoff the season, there will be a free dinner at the third annual Buck Expo and Deer Hunting Extravaganza starting at 6 p.m., Friday night at Marion Baptist Church's Family Life Center.
Crittenden and Livingston are Zone 1 counties where the bag limit is one antlered and unlimited anlterless deer with the required permits.
Last year, hunters took 113,536 deer and more are expected to be harvested this season. About 30,000 to 40,000 deer will be taken this coming weekend alone.
The economic impact of deer hunting in Kentucky is estimated at more than $400 million annually.
Crittenden County’s Hunters for the Hungry is accepting donations of deer and money this hunting season. If you harvest a deer and would like to donate it, take the animal to Family Butcher Shop at 346 Rooster Lane off Ky. 654 North Monday through Saturday.
Hunters for the Hungry operates on donations, so please give to the organization when you donate a deer. Your contribution helps pay processing fees. The venison is distributed by the Crittenden County Food Bank at the former health department building each month. If you want to be part of Hunters for the Hungry, call 704-0435.
