Around Chennai

Chennai metropolitan area is spread over a sprawling 1,177 square kilometres.A number of small towns are located in the vicinity of Chennai and have been categorized as areas around Chennai. These satellite towns include Mammalapuram, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Sri Perumpudur, Tiruvallur and Arakkonam. Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram regions share their boundaries with the city. Some townships that are located in these regions like Ambattur in Tiruvallur is often considered as an extension of the city. The township has a topography similar to that of the city but as an administrative unit it comes under the jurisdiction of Tiruvallur.

The regions around Chennai are fast growing into developed urban centres. Tiruvallur, that lies towards the west of the city has a number of small industrial estate units located within its territory. Kanchipuram on the other hand is very popular as a sacred place. The regions around Chennai are connected with the city by a network of roadways. These places also serve as getaways from the popular city.
